SVS, a name synonymous with high performance, affordable subwoofers is today making more than just great subs, they are also making great full range speakers such as their Ultra Series and more recently the Prime Series.
SVS”s much deserved and almost unassailable reputation in the manufacture of subwoofers has been reinvested in making complete affordable full range speakers. The latest Prime Satellite 5.1 is a prime example.
Comprising five compact bookshelf type, two way speakers and an active sealed subwoofer the Prime Satellite 5.1 retails for RM4,299.
Measuring 8.75″ x 4.9″ x 6″ the satellite houses a 4.5″ polypropylene woofer and a 1″ aluminium tweeter.
The woofer is loaded via a rear reflex port that is said to enable the satellite to reach a low bass frequency of below 70 hertz, which is fairly extended for speaker of such compact dimensions.
As befits its reputation in subwoofer design technique the satellite cabinet is extensively braced to minimise cabinet vibration that may otherwise mitigate bass frequency extension.
To ensure a wide high frequency dispersion with maximum clarity SVS utilizes an FEA optimised diffuser in the front of the tweeter. Weighing a petite 6.5 lbs the Prime Satellite has a powerful 150 watts handling capability into a nominal 8 ohms impedance. Sensitivity at 85dbs for 1 watt input is on the “lowish” side and a reasonably powerful amplifier is recommended.
The partnering subwoofer is SVS”s existing SB-1000 compact active sub featuring a 12″ woofer and a built-in 300 watts RMS Class D power amplifier. Measuring 13″ x 13″ x 13″ the SB-1000 weighs 28lbs and is said to be able to plumb the low frequency depth to an impressive 24 hertz.
The SVS Prime Satellite, although configured for a 5.1 operation can easily be upgraded to be compatible with the current Dolby Atmos surround by simply adding two more Prime Satellites for a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration.
