CEO of DS Audio, Tetsuaki Aoyagi, was at Audio Perfectionist, his new Malaysian distributor, today to demo his optical cartridges and explain how they work.
Two sessions were held with the earlier one for a small group of media personnel. It also marked the return of the affable El Hefe who was absent from the local AV scene since he checked into hospital in April for a medical procedure.
The later session was for serious audiophiles who turned up to find out more about optical cartridges and whether they should upgrade to the DS Audio cartridges.
Tetsuaki gave a short talk on the differences between moving magnet, moving coil and his optical cartridges and the pros and cons of each technology.
After that, everyone moved into the main demo room at the rear of the showroom where the DS Master 3 and Grandmaster EX cartridges were played ; these were connected to a Master 3 phono equalizer. Later a tube TB100 phono equalizer was used.
Tetsuaki also demoed the ES-002 Eccentricity Detection Stabilizer which uses infrared LED to detect the locked groove to determine the extent of eccentricity of an LP. After that the LP is manually moved just a bit to get it to spin with the least eccentricity. A quick demo revealed that adjusting for least eccentricity made a big difference. The Eccentricity Detection Stabilizer also doubles as a record weight.
