KLIAVS 2023: Monitor Audio Hyphn — outstanding design

Monitor Audio’s flagship speakers, Hyphn, were too large for the Kuala Lumpur International AV Show 2023 demo room of The Experts Group Malaysia at The Gardens Hotel. So visitors were redirected to the company’s showroom in the adjoining The Gardens Mall.

There, the Monitor Audio Hyphn speakers looked very grand and outstanding. The speakers are totally revolutionary in terms of design as each speaker comprises two tall cabinets linked together with a ‘bridge’ that houses the M-Array drivers.

The M-Array drivers comprise six small mid drivers surrounding a tweeter to emulate the point source qualities of a coincident driver. Behind the ‘bridge’ are two pairs of woofers (two in each tall cabinet) with their cones facing each other so that the bass waves created move outwards from the air gap between the two tall cabinets.

This is a striking new design and in terms of looks the Hyphn is totally futuristic. The speakers were named Hyphn because in architecture, a hyphen is a connecting link between two larger building elements often found in Palladian architecture.

In the showroom, the Hyphn speakers are driven by Rotel Michi pre amp and monoblock amps.

My impression of them was that they sounded smooth with a good amount of details, but they were too polite. I think they need to be driven by the highest quality amplification which can deliver a huge amount of power.

Head to The Experts Group Malaysia showroom in The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur to have a listen to the really expensive Monitor Audio Hyphn speakers.
