It was a pleasant afternoon at Audio Image in Petaling Jaya today as Mon Acoustic CEO Young Sub Byon hosted demo sessions to three groups of audiophiles to show how his speakers perform.
The Mon Acoustic PlatiMon Virtual Coaxial VC One speakers, which are bookshelf speakers, and the VC Two units, which act as the sub-woofers but include super tweeters, were driven by a Burmester integrated amp with an Eversolo streamer/DAC as source.
With the complete two-box system, you can wire the two speakers into a 3.5 or 4-way speaker system. The VC Two also has a switch to change the crossover frequency of the super tweeter for different sonic flavours. You can also plug or unplug the ports at the rear to tune the bass output according to your listening room’s acoustics. The two-box system is rated to have a frequency response of 20Hz to 40 kHz.

The most interesting part was the different sonic flavours that could be achieved by changing the system from 3.5 to 4-way. Also switching off the super tweeter or changing the setting could also change the sound quality. The Mon Acoustic PlatiMon Virtual Coaxial VC One and Two speakers are most versatile and tuneable to suit your taste.
They are 3.5-way/4-way aluminium cabinet, bass-reflex floor standing loudspeakers. Drivers are 2 x 5.25″ (133mm) midrage MTM drivers, 1″ (27mm) berylium tweeter, 8″ PP bass woofer.
Crossover frequencies change when switching from 3.5-way (3,100 Hz/25,000 Hz) and 4-way (250 Hz/3,100 Hz/25,000 Hz). Sensitivity also changes from 91dB (3.5-way) to 90dB (4-way). When used as 3.5-way, the sound becomes more forward, brighter and dynamic. Switching to 4-way results in a more laid-back sound which is less dynamic.
Mon Acoustic CEO Young Sub Byon explained that having a bookshelf speaker placed on top of a sub woofer to make a complete unit was inspired by Wilson Audio’s The WATT/Puppy speaker system. The ball bearings were used not just to decouple the two speaker units but also serve as a transmission route for kinetic energy from the top speaker unit to travel down to the isolating feet to be dissipated.
The Mon Acoustic SuperMon Mini retails at RM10,100, the PlatiMon VC 1 retails at RM39,900 and the PlatiMon VC 2 costs RM49,200.
Mon Acoustic speakers are available at Audio Image, which is at No. 7, Jalan 19/29, Section 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Call Joseph Wong at 010-268 8052 for an appointment.
