It was a historic demo session at Begins Acoustic’s showroom today as for the first time ever in Malaysia, live recordings (by EB Duet) were made on reel-to-reel tape and DSD simultaneously and the recordings were played back immediately after they were made.

The demo system was quite high end with a Gryphon Diablo 333 integrated amp driving a pair of LuKang Spoey 230 large bookshelf speakers. The reel-to-reel tape recorder was a vintage Revox while a Korg recorded in 5.6 DSD.
Also attending the event was TK Han, the boss of YY Sound Systems, and Rox Shih, CEO of Lu Kang Audio, who flew in from Taiwan to attend the demo.
The event was a casual affair and EB Duet, comprising Eve Wong as vocalist and Billy Ho as guitarist/producer, chatted with the attendees and later autographed the LPs and CDs that were bought by their fans.
The recordings were all done in one take and there was no room for mistakes. Though the Revox was an old machine, the dense and smooth mids that tape recorders are famed for could be discerned. While the DSD files had more clarity and a lower noise floor, they did not have the dense and magical mids that made Eve’s singing sound melodious.
It was a totally unique and enjoyable experience. Kudos to Kenix Chua (who doubled as recording assistant), Eve Wong and Billy Ho for organising the event, which featured a session in Mandarin and another in English.
