Familiar, but Different.
Monitor Audio has just launched the latest iteration of the Silver series. The new range now indicated with “8G” or 8th generation. The range which has 6 speaker options allow for the ability to select a speaker to fit your listening space or put together a quality multichannel or home theatre system. Within this range we find the middle child, the Monitor Audio Silver 300 8G, which I have for review.
The Monitor Audio Silver 300 8G is a beautifully petite tower speaker. It is a 3-way, 4 driver speaker, which in all honesty would look exactly the same with the outgoing Silver 300 7G when parked side by side. It’s only upon very close inspection that you notice the improvements that earn it the 8G name.
The first visually noticeable difference is the mesh protecting the gold dome tweeter. This new pattern mesh is actually a waveguide that works together with the tweeter and mid-range assembly which also has a pattern debossed onto it. This pattern is new and was absent in the outgoing model, which had a smooth surface. The overall cabinet design also retains the same great quality and finish. Worth mentioning that the new European Walnut veneer on the review unit is very beautiful to look at.
Swing to the back, and the ports which sit at the top and bottom of the cabinet, though identical in location, also have been given tweaks. Firstly, the internal shape has now changed, which has a flared geometry. The port diameter has also been increased on the internal opening. There is also a new pattern on the surface of the port which differs from the lined design on the outgoing model.
These fine engineering enhancements, is Monitor Audio polishing up their previous designs which already perform great. The result is a speaker which looks the same, but more refined and muscular then before. Characteristics that show true when plugged in and powered up with music.
The first thing I noticed when listening to the Monitor Audio 300 8G is its potent bass weight and heft. There is a generous dose of bass, but delivered with very minimal bloat. Bass also maintains a good amount of speed and punch, but stays controlled enough that the precious midrange still stays clean. This improvement in mass did not compromise on nuance which thankfully is delivered well. Bass heavy tracks like Eminem’s Godzilla sticks the landing, with deep pulsating bass while keeping his vocal clean and clear. A signature of Monitor Audio.
Switching to The Robots by Kraftwerk and the 300 8G digs deep and showcases gradation to the bass. The mids and highs which are always in control also shine here. This track also brings forward a noticeable character of this speaker, particularly in the top end. This speaker has a rather smooth top end. Even when swapped out to songs with sibilant vocals or brighter tones, the speaker never goes hot and becomes unbearable to listen too.
The smooth nature of the higher frequencies, makes them forgiving when it comes to recording quality. This character also makes them great for extended listening sessions. There is sufficient detail and clarity to provide adequate insight into recordings but stops short of being too incisive or expressive with the high frequencies. A delicate balance between being detailed and accurate while maintaining a degree of musical enjoyment.
Granted there may be some who would want a little more energy up top to bring out that sparkle or sheen that make tracks like Keith Don’t Go by Nils Lofgren exciting, but to me I think that trade-off is a fair ask. The sound signature of the Monitor Audio Silver 300 8G will suit audiophiles looking for an easy-going speaker for everyday listening. Someone who has a large collection of music from various genres that enjoys just hitting play and relaxing.
The Silver series routinely presents itself as a solid middle ground in Hi-Fi. The speaker series offers an excellent balance of performance, engineering and design at a price point that works for both entry level and experienced audiophiles. The Silver 300 8G is the continuation of that ethos with practical incremental upgrades that push it forward, keeping relevance in an ever-competitive market. These are speakers worth the audition, if pure music enjoyment and relaxed listening is what you are looking for.
