The centre of influence of the world in terms of economic power and innovation is beginning to shift from the West to the East and exceptional evidence of this phenomenon comes in the form of Mon Acoustic speakers from South Korea.
These are well-designed, well-made and innovative speakers from Daegu, in the southeastern part of South Korea.
A great example of innovation is the Mon Acoustic PlatiMon Virtual Coaxial speakers. It comes in two units — the VC One which is like a bookshelf speaker and the VC Two which acts as the sub-woofer unit but includes a super tweeter. The VC One can be bought as bookshelf speakers and later, when you want more bass and your bank account has sufficient funds, you can buy the matching VC Two.
The VC One features two five-inch woofers with an AMT tweeter in a M-T-M or D’Appolito configuration while the VC Two features an eight-inch woofer and a 28mm dome beryllium super tweeter. The cabinets are made of aluminium.
With the complete two-box system, you can wire the two speakers into a 3.5 or 4-way speaker system. The VC Two also has a switch to change the crossover frequency of the super tweeter for different sonic flavours. You can also plug or unplug the ports at the rear to tune the bass output according to your listening room’s acoustics. The two-box system is rated to have a frequency response of 20Hz to 40 kHz.
To make things even more interesting, the VC One is coupled to the VC Two on three ball bearings.
To complete the range, Mon Acoustic also makes small bookshelf speakers, the SuperMon Mini 2026 speakers which can also be used as desktop speakers.
The Mon Acoustic SuperMon Mini retails at RM10,100, the PlatiMon VC 1 retails at RM39,900 and the PlatiMon VC 2 costs RM49,200.
Mon Acoustic speakers are available at Audio Image, which is at No. 7, Jalan 19/29, Section 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Call Joseph Wong at 010-268 8052 for an appointment.
